One School in a Remote Karnataka Village Will Soon Have All Its Study Material Online. #DigitalIndia

Bandahalli village in Karnataka, located at a distance of 60 km from Mysuru, has an amazing government school where the authorities are taking many important steps to move towards a more digital way of learning.

Inspired by the Digital India campaign, the school is making all its study material available online, other than solved exam papers, exam time tables, a photo gallery, and more.

All 107 students in the Government Higher Secondary School of Bandahalli come from agricultural families and there are seven staff members. “Parents think government schools lack modern amenities. We want our students to get on to a global platform,” the school headmaster, Dr. Suresh told The Indian Express.
Prior to this, the school had a computer section with 13 systems that were sanctioned by the government, but they could not be used because of frequent power cuts in the region. Suresh, who has completed his PhD in education, invested about Rs. 6,000 from his own pocket to purchase a UPS and started teaching children using a large screen. This led to an increased interest among the students to study and learn more. Many of them started staying back after school hours to explore and study as much as they could.
Suresh thought about the website in September 2015, when he was hearing a lot about the Digital India campaign. He discussed the idea with his colleague Subbaraman, who teaches English in the school and planned the website. He spent about Rs. 15,000 in working with a designer from Mysuru. The website (http://ghsbandahallikrn.org) will be formally launched on March 18. The content will be in Kannada initially, and it will be available in English soon.
“There are times when Education Department circulars and orders reach some schools late. We plan to upload them on the website. This is also to sensitise teachers to the use of computers,” said the headmaster, adding that they are now approaching different organizations to seek help in getting access to more computer systems for the school.
The website will also include teachers’ profiles, academic calendars, results, video and photo galleries, admission information, teachers’ and students’ milestones, etc.
